Women Climbing Up the Corporate Ladder

Women Climbing Up the Corporate Ladder

In the corporate world, many executive women still feel that they must overachieve in order to climb up the corporate ladder.  Statistics support the challenges that women face when aiming to reach higher status within their respective company:  According to Forbes.com, the Chicago Network’s 2006 annual census of Chicago's top 50 companies found that, for the first time in nine years, executive representation by women declined, despite more positions of this status opening.

Mastering key skills including relationship-building and communications are key to success as people -- both women and men-- strive to achieve their professional goals.  Here are some helpful tips on how women can continue their climb up the corporate ladder.

Communicate.  Focusing on a solid career path is important for key women in the corporate world, and it is okay to communicate goals to superiors from time to time.  This not only reflects dedication to a successful career, it displays enthusiasm for the company’s success as well.

Keep Options Open.   Preserve relationships outside the company.  External opportunities should always remain on a working woman’s radar, especially if things aren't proceeding along within the timeframe that she has set within her current company.

Get Involved.  Expanding a social network can be a great benefit to a woman’s career.  Becoming involved in politics, philanthropic events, networking groups and any other organization where a woman’s intelligence and skills can be displayed will hold her in higher esteem.

Sustain a Professional Attitude.  A woman must act, dress and present herself the way she wishes to be viewed by colleagues and managers.  By exuding professionalism that includes a positive attitude, a woman will gain the respect of others in the office.
